Events in Umbria in June are steeped in tradition and as always, there is also a wealth of cultural happenings.
On the first weekend in June the streets of Spello are covered with flowers for the solemn Corpus Domini procession. It all happens in the night of Saturday to Sunday, when the inhabitants of Spello gather in the streets of the historic centre to create magnificent floral carpets, the famous Infiorate.
Once the bustle of the Christmas festivities is over, Umbria gradually returns to its normal pace and routines.
But January is a month that holds a whole host of little surprises for the astute traveller.
Street markets, concerts, theatre and other events in Umbria ensure that you will never be bored!
A few examples:
February is without doubt the month of Norcia, a city in the Appenines between Umbria and Le Marche renowned in Italy and throughout the world for its cured meats and the Umbrian black truffles that abound in its mountains.
The delicious “Nero Norcia” Umbrian truffle festival invites you to spend two weekends delighting your taste buds in a friendly atmosphere within the magnificent setting of the city of San Benedetto.
Of all the events held in Umbria in March, the International Dance Festival in Spoleto and the celebrations in honour of Saint Benedict in Norcia truly stand out. The two international events, although very different from one another, are both held in the third week of the month.
Between March and April, the Easter celebrations signal the beginning of a season rich in events in Umbria. Some examples:
Assisi antique market: enthusiasts can visit the national exhibition market “Assisi Antiquariato” held at the Bastia Umbra exhibition centre from 20 April to 1 May. It represents a unique opportunity to admire precious objects and works of art from major Italian and foreign galleries.
Those who know Umbria associate the month of May with the town of Gubbio which hosts two enticing events: the Corsa dei Ceri on 15 May and the "Palio della Balestra" crossbow tournament on the last Sunday of the month.
The undisputed star of the month of July, the Umbria Jazz Festival is the most keenly awaited event in Umbria. Perugia has welcomed world-famous jazzmen such as James Brown, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins and Keith Jarret to Umbria Jazz, and musicians are always keen to return. But the true queen of the event is Perugia itself with its timeless charm, its stones rich in history and its breathtaking scenery.
