Penelope a Rasiglia is an event held every year in the village of Rasiglia, Italy to promote the hand loom weaving techniques of the Menotre Valley in Umbria.
This is an ancestral medieval technique whose past glory is demonstrated by the high number of woollen mills and dye-works still present in the area, and whose secrets are still mastered to this day by a number of weavers.
As luck would have it, our family has its own highly-skilled weaver: Luciana, custodian of the textile arts of the Tonti woollen mill.
Each year we take part in a historical weaving workshop where we carry out demonstrations of hand loom weaving techniques, one of the major attractions of the event.
The whole village gets involved and the streets of Rasiglia are filled with traditional Umbrian woven blankets exhibited in the windows. Take a walk through the alleyways and you will easily chance across cultural demonstrations such as folk performances, poetry readings, classical music concerts and painting and photography exhibitions.
The 2014 edition will be held on 7-8 June.
Do not miss this unique, evocative attraction presenting all Umbria’s traditional crafts.
At the Penelope a Rasiglia weaving event you will also discover ancient professions that are still very much alive...
