May events in Umbria
Those who know Umbria associate the month of May with the town of Gubbio which hosts two enticing events: the Corsa dei Ceri on 15 May and the “Palio della Balestra” crossbow tournament on the last Sunday of the month.
Assisi Calendimaggio (Spring Festival)
Other towns in the region are no less exciting however and will amaze you with their charming Umbrian festivals, starting with Assisi’s spring festivities, Calendimaggio (2-4 May) with its colours, dancing and performances in the piazza, a jubilant celebration of nature’s reawakening.
Kite Festival in Castiglione del Lago
Another highly colourful event in the first week of May in Umbria, “Coloriamo i cieli” (from 1 to 5 May) captivates adults and children alike in the magnificent setting of Castiglione del Lago on the banks of Lake Trasimeno. Hundreds of kites and hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes colour the town’s skies at this entertaining festival.
But Umbria in May is not all about performances and entertainment. On 21 and 22 May, Cascia celebrates Saint Rita. For two days you can relive the journey of faith embarked upon by the saint of hopeless cases in a highly evocative, spiritual atmosphere.
Another Umbrian festival taking place the same week will appeal to plant and flower lovers: Todi Fiorita (from 24 to 26 May). A true ode to Spring, the exhibition transforms Todi into a magnificent flower garden of intoxicating perfumes and colours.
“Porchetta” and wine
Finally, pleasure-lovers are well catered for in Umbria in May. The “Porchettiamo” festival is held from 10 to 12 May in San Terenziano in the province of Perugia. Sagrantino wine and home-made beers add spice to the programme for the spit-roast pork festival par excellence, together with music, games, entertainment and a whole host of cultural activities. Then there are two wine festivals: “Cantine Aperte” on Sunday 26 May and “Vini nel Mondo” in Spoleto from 31 May to 2 June. These are two unmissable events for enthusiasts with wine tours in Spoleto’s historic centre and itinerant tasting sessions moving from cellar to cellar.
